President and CEO, SMSi, and publisher of Urban Call Publications
Lafayette Jones is president and CEO of Segmented Marketing Services Inc. (www.segmentedmarketing.com). SMSi a national marketing, sampling and publishing firm serving multicultural communities and its clients include General Motors, Procter and Gamble, Aetna Medicare, and others. He is publisher of Urban Call publications and a multicultural marketing expert who has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. As a marketing manager for ConAgra's Hunt-Wesson division, he created the highly successful Orville Redenbacher Gourmet Popping Corn and Hunt’s Manwich strategies. He is also a former Procter & Gamble, Kraft and Unilever sales and marketing executive . In Chicago, at two leading minority-owned powerhouses -Johnson Publishing Company (Ebony, Jet magazines – Fashion Fair Cosmetics) he served as Vice President-General Manager Beauty Products and at Johnson Products Company (Ultra Sheen and Gentle Treatment products) he served as Vice President-Sales and marketing. Jones also forged a strategic alliance between competitors in the ethnic health and beauty care industry with the creation of the American Health and Beauty Aids Institute (www.ahbai.org) a trade association of minority-owned hair care companies and created the AHBAI Proud Lady logo, a black female silhouette which appears on the millions of packages, denoting minority company ownership.
His nationally syndicated columns appear in Sally Beauty company’s Sally magazine (“Color Me Beautiful”), OTC Beauty Magazine – the bi-lingual monthly magazine serving 8,000 inner-city retailers (“Urban Call Briefs – Multicultural Marketing”); Beauty Industry Report (BIR) monthly newsletter reaching 8,000 key decision makers/distributors (“The Multicultural Report”); Sophisticates Black Hair Styles & Care Guide – a bi-monthly magazine for consumers and professionals with a readership of 1 million (“Role Model – Beyond Beauty”). His publisher’s column is a regular feature of Urban Call –the Beauty Salon and Barbershop edition, which reaches 100,000 stylists nationally, and their patrons. As a leading national urban marketing expert and speaker, he frequently addresses conferences and business schools on marketing to African-Americans and Latinos.
He is married to Sandra Miller Jones, SMSi Founding Chair. They have worked together nearly 30 years. Sandra and Lafayette have a beloved daughter, Bridgette Miller Jones, who is a freshman at Spelman College in Atlanta. He is also the father of three adult children (Kevin, Melanie and Tara).
In 2007 he was awarded “ Man of the Year “ by the Winston-Salem Chronicle newspaper and named by The Business Journal as one of 2007 Most Influential (top 80) in the Triad North Carolina region. For the 2006/2007 school year, Sandra and Lafayette were named by the local chapter Jack and Jill of America chapter as parents of the year. (Distinguished Mother and Fabulous Father)
In Winston-Salem, NC Jones is a founder and board member of the faith-based Goler Community Development Corporation (www.golercdc.org) that is revitalizing a once-vibrant African American business and residential district into a mixed use, commercial and residential 15 acre $100 million development, The Heights – The New Town Downtown. He also services as Vice Chairman of the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership, the organization leads strategic development and markets the city's building and re-development initiatives. During 2004 as chairman of the Victory Masonic Mutual Credit Union, the oldest minority-owned financial services institution in North Carolina, he led the merger of the 60-year-old organization with Truliant Federal Credit Union, ($1 billion) assets (www.truliantfcu.org), where he now volunteers as a member of the board of directors. He has served on numerous local and national boards, including Winston-Salem State Foundation, Summit School, Goler Memorial Church AME Zion Trustee, Promotion Marketing Association, American Health and Beauty Aids Institute (AHBAI) and many others.
Jones is a graduate of Fisk University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts-History and Government with a minor in art. He attended Howard University Law School and completed Executive Management classes at both Stanford University and Dartmouth College business schools.
